Interim Network Director Named for VA Health Care Upstate New York

James Cody, FACHE was appointed interim Network Director for VA Health Care Upstate New York (VISN 2) July 1, 2013. VISN 2 comprises the Albany, Bath, Buffalo, Canandaigua and Syracuse VA Medical Centers and thirty-one community based outpatient clinics and serves more than 205,000 enrolled Veterans in Upstate New York. Mr. Cody was asked to serve as interim Network Director by the previous Network Director Mr. David West, while VA Central Office conducts a national search for his replacement.
Mr. Cody has been the Director of Syracuse VA Medical Center, a 106-bed, tertiary and primary care, teaching facility with a 48-bed Nursing Home Care Unit for the past 13 years. At the recent grand opening of the Syracuse VA Medical Center’s Spinal Cord Injury and Disease Clinic, VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki recognized the Syracuse VA Medical Center as being number one in patient satisfaction out of 152 VA Medical Centers and attributed it to Mr. Cody’s leadership.
As the interim Network Director Mr. Cody’s goal is to ensure VA Health Care Upstate New York remains the finest VA Network in meeting the health care needs of Upstate New York Veterans. Mr. Cody strives to take actions that get results for exceptional patient care, satisfaction and customer service for Veterans.
Mr. Cody began his career with VA in 1978 (after initially entering federal service with the Department of Agriculture in March 1977), as a Safety Specialist at the Brooklyn VA Medical Center, New York. He progressed through positions of increasing complexity and responsibility at VA Central Office and Washington VA Medical Center in Washington DC, and then at VA Medical Centers in Baltimore, Maryland; Lyons, New Jersey; Providence, Rhode Island and Syracuse, New York.
Mr. Cody earned the degree of Masters in Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Health Administration from New York University in January 1981. He had previously earned his Bachelor of Science (BSE) in Health Education from the State University of New York College at Cortland in May 1976. He is the recipient of numerous performance and special achievement awards including the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executives in 2009.
Mr. Cody has stated that while he will not be submitting his name as a candidate for the Network Director position, during his time as the Interim, he will devote maximum effort toward ensuring that VA Health Care Upstate New York continues to provide the highest levels of Quality, Satisfaction, Access and Value for our Veterans!
During his tenure as interim Network Director for VA Health Care Upstate New York, Ms. Judy Hayman, Ph.D. Associate Director for the Syracuse VA Medical Center will assume the role as acting Medical Center Director for the Syracuse VA.
