Acupuncture
Acupuncture therapy has been shown to be effective in treating symptoms resulting from a wide range of conditions. At Syracuse VA Medical Center, this traditional treatment is usually provided alongside more conventional modern medicine. Acupuncture may be effective for patients who suffer from:
- Pain associated with an injury or illness
- Nausea and vomiting after an operation
- Nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy
- Knee pain from osteoarthritis
- Low back pain
- Depression or other mental health concerns
- Substance dependency
Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles at a variety of points in the body. It has been practiced for at least 2,500 years. It has long been known to activate endorphins – the body’s natural pain relievers. VA acupuncturists are licensed health care providers with medical training. They provide this service to patients who seek an additional or alternative method to managing pain or discomfort.
