Alzheimer’s and Dementia care help diagnose and manage these diseases which affect the brain

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are conditions that affect the brain. Memory loss is one of the first signs. Other signs can be changes in personality or behavior. Speaking clearly might also become a problem.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia are most common in persons who are age 65 years and older. That does not mean they are a part of the normal aging process. Early diagnosis of is important. A medical examination is necessary to identify what has caused the condition. Some forms of dementia are reversible with appropriate medical attention. In other cases, a treatment plan can be developed that will help support the patient, family and caregivers.

The Geriatrics and Extended Care Line offers help in obtaining a diagnosis, treatment and care for Alzheimer’s and dementia. Dementia Care Managers work with primary care providers and specialty staff. It also gives them time to connect with support groups and make practical plans for the future.

Depending on the Veteran's needs, services may include home based primary care, homemaker and home health aide, respite, adult day health care, outpatient clinic, inpatient hospital, nursing home, or hospice care. Caregiver support is an essential part of all of these services.
