Syracuse VA Medical Center

For patients who are facing serious medical conditions, Syracuse VA Medical Center offers palliative and hospice care to ease the physical and emotional symptoms. Hospice and palliative care are focused on providing Veterans with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness, whatever the diagnosis.

Hospice care is given to patients who are nearing the end of life because of a terminal condition. Since a cure is not possible, the goal is to help both patient and family remain as comfortable as possible in the last days and months. A complete team of medical, spiritual and counseling professionals is available whenever they are needed.

Palliative care is appropriate at any age and stage of a serious medical condition and can be provided along with treatments that are intended to cure the patient. Palliative care is provided by a team that includes doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains and counselors. The Palliative Care team works with the Veteran’s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support.

Our health care team is ready to provide the emotional and spiritual support that can help patients and families in trying times. VA chaplains can provide spiritual guidance and prayer. They are available at your request. Counseling professionals can help manage emotional needs that may arise
