Mental Health

If you qualify for VA health care, you can get high-quality mental health services as part of your benefits. You may also be able to get care for certain mental health problems even if you don't have VA health care.

The Behavioral Health Care Line at the Syracuse VA Medical Center serves Veterans in inpatient and outpatient settings to help them achieve a full and meaningful life. Mental health services are provided in a number of settings based on the needs of the patient. The following is a brief explanation of the behavioral health services we offer. Click the links for more information on treatment options and referral processes.

Our Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic provides mental health services as a part of the Patient Aligned Care Team to help Veterans work toward symptom resolution. Counseling and treatment are offered according to an individualized plan.

Outpatient Mental Health provides timely access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care by keeping a focus on recovery from mental health challenges that empowers Veterans to take charge of their treatment and live a full and meaningful life. This approach focuses on the Veteran’s strengths and capabilities, and hope to Veterans and the family members.  OMH provides treatments that are proven to be effective for mental health concerns. These treatments are time-limited and focus on helping Veterans recover and meet their goals. OMH health care providers work in a multi-disciplinary team to provide safe and effective treatment for the whole person using a recovery approach. Veterans take an active role in their care by partnering with their providers to improve their health and well-being.

Inpatient Behavioral Health Care is available for Veterans who require more intervention than can be provided in the community. Acute inpatient psychiatry patients are admitted to the facility to be treated by our team of psychiatrists, social workers, nurses and other therapists. Each inpatient unit also has primary and specialty care for other health needs. Acute inpatient stays typically last three to ten days and are followed up by further treatment after the patient is discharged from the facility.
